Hi,

We have limited time in Thailand (1 week) and are thinking of taking a taxi straight from the airport to Ban Phe to get the boat to Ko Samet. Are any of the taxis reluctant to take you so far? Will they run the meter or should we expect to negotiate a flat rate?

We arrive at airport at 13:00 - will we make the ferry that day over to Ko Samet?

Thanks,
C

I would suggest you also look into taking a minibus.

Again to charter a minibus starts at 200baht per day plus fuel but if you take a schedduled one it is about 300 baht per head.

Should take less then 4 hours

That would be worth negotiating with some of the Limo services swarming the airport. Don't let them have your bags until you have a firm price including tolls and fuel. Also, insist on seeing the car that you will be riding in before handing any money over. There is a lot of competition, if you are careful, you should be able to get a good price and a decent car that will be much more comfortable than a taxi for the 3 1/2 to 4 hour ride.

The "official" flat rate to Rayong (the province in which Koh Samet is located) is 1700 baht, according to a rate card I photographed in a taxi. The driver will ask for more, you can try to bargain it lower. it's 210 km by the way.

Thanks so much for this info!

There used to be mini buses waiting at the east end of the terminal at the old airport. I would imagine that they are still there at the new airport.

Taxi drivers are not reluctant, usually. Most of them know they can pick up a return fare from Ban Phe to Pattaya or back to Bkk.
