Hi guys,

my girlfriend and I are planning a stop off trip to Thailand for 4 weeks before we go on to australia for a year.

We're leaving about May 2012, and were planning on staying in Bangkok for about 3 nights (Koh San road area) then getting 2 first class tickets for the sleeper train down to Surat Thani and then ferry crossing to Koh Samui. I think you can book these tickets together...is that right?

My problem is I have no idea where to start? should I use a local travel agent on KSR to book the tickets?

Can I turn up and expect the book the train and ferry tickets for departure 3 days later? or would I need to leave me time for this (e.g does the service book up quickly or need to be booked a certain amount of days in advance)

Also I have to be back in Bangkok about 3 weeks after leaving for Samui as I have to catch my onward flight to Australia.....so can you book return Tickets at the same time, or is it best to book these from a travel agent in samui?

Finally If anyone can provide me with an approximate cost per person for this train+feery ticket that would be great!

Sorry at lot of info I know, but I want to make sure I have all the relevant info!!!

Many thanks in advance!!

Your combo ticket for bus and ferry can be used any time. Depends which ferry company they sell you a ticket for. Also no need to book them ahead unlike the train as there are buses that meet the trains in Surat Thani.

I want to purchase a rail/ferry ticket for Nov 18th (give or take a day) from BKK to Ko Samui on train #167. The above link (Thailand Train Ticket) has been blocked due to it distributing malicious software. I checked the Thai Rail site but it only sells train tickets and not ferry tickets. Is there another reputable web site where I can purchase a ticket? Or, is it advisable to purchase the ticket at the train station the day before travel? Unfortunately, the earliest time I can purchase the ticket is the night before. Is that enough time?

Or, should I book the train now and then find transport when I arrive in Surat Thani? Seems like there are at least 3 ferry companies going to Ko Samui (Raja, Lomprayah & Seatran), which is better? Looks like Seatran offers bus/ferry combo for around 250B.

Very strange indeed about Thailand Train Ticket, there was no malware warning or attack page warning when I used them or when I provided the link. Thai Focus also sell tickets online but I didn't use them as their prices were quite a bit higher.
If you can get to a railway station, enquire about booking combined rail/ferry ticket.

There's no problem that can't be ignored if we really put our minds to it.
