Wifey and I will be wrapping up a long sabbatical with 8ish days in the southern Andaman, and I’m having trouble narrowing down a place or 2 (or 3?). Typical, beautiful, low-key, but not dead as the criteria :p.

We’re getting out of a 10day silent meditation, so will probably want a place that’s pretty chill with some activity. Clean, pretty beaches will be key for wifey. I wouldn’t mind a few activities (beach volleyball and snorkelling). Nightlife isn’t a big priority, but a bit of live music (a low-key shake shack if those still exist). We can afford some higher prices (1-2000 baht for a room if worth it), but resorts can be boring.

We can fly to krabi or Trang, but only have a week so I wouldn’t want to spend a ton of time in transit. Railey sounds nice, but maybe a bit beat-up? Phi phi I always assumed sucked. Lanta may be the best compromise, but perhaps a bit boring. South of that like Lipe or Muk, I think may not be worth the transport time...

I’ve been to Phangan and Tao 6 years ago and big Ko Chang 4 years ago. Loved both experiences, but it seems like you need to be more discerning now to avoid frat parties, 5star resorts or garbage. Any suggestions or resources would be great. I’ve been to Tezzas but the posts are so old I’m worried it’s out of date.

Thanks a bunch!

I think that Tezza's stuff is still pretty relevant. Certainly for vibe, if not prices.

Lipe is even more shark-jumpy now, but that is probably the only significant difference.

The first week of December is a very different animal from the 4th week of December..........

Okay, will check out Tezza more than. Glad he’s making celeb status. Helped me out a few years back.

It’s dec 10-19. We should book it all in advance ?

That Tezza site was great in its time but it really is outdated now. There seems to be no attempt to keep it current.

I think in your shoes I'd go for Lanta. The sheer size of it gives you so much variety in the type of ambience you're looking for. The smaller islands may have prettier beaches but choice is limited. Generally speaking the further south you go down the west coast of Lanta, the quieter the beaches become. I always liked Kan Tiang beach for the compromise of pretty cove coupled with choice of eateries and bars without the craziness. Lanta is a very easy island to get around on bike / scooter or songthaew so the choice of anything you want on any day is always there.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D

More than 5 years is a long time the way they develop Thai beaches.
