Seem to remember Rabies injection were /are very painful. They used to have to inject in the stomach. Is that true, maybe I'm dreaming . ?

do you know if the verorab injection is the "imunoglobulon"? i got bit by a rabid dog in bkk once. went to hospital, dont remeber name, they gave me a few injections. but when i got back to the west a day later i went to see a doc and the doctor told me that they had missed the very important shot. the imunoglobulon. just a thought

Thaifan, I haven't been bitten or scratched, just as a preventative measure. I can't resist patting or sleeping with the occaisional animal (4 legged kind, cats ) and do get the odd injury.
Plus, I recently learned that if you have had the course of verorab, and are bitten, you only need the have a course of verorab after. But if you haven't had the course and are bitten, then you need to also get the immunoglobin (blood) product which I have been advised, and think is best avoided in asia.
They are a lot cheaper in thailand than Australia....over 300AUD for the course of 3. And I will be paying all up around 78AUD.
They didn't hurt at all, but I have heard of people being injected in the stomach after a bite, and also injected into or around the bite site.
Peleus, that is a horrible story, I am glad you are ok. How do you know the dog had rabies?

looked rabid. was walking to a food stall in bangers, then all of a sudden this dog came out of nowhere from under a mini-bus and bit me. i was shocked of course but the dog was just sitting there with his/her head out from under the carriage of the bus. looked like foam around the mouth, but then again could have just been my perception at the time. still dont know if it was rabid, but you have to take the precautions. so for now i am alright, but apparently even with the vaccinations and imunoglobulon you may still die from rabies up to fifteen years from the incident. happend in 2001 and still praying that my head doesnt swell and i go into a coma and die.

<hr>Purpose of pre-exposure prophylaxis
Pre-exposure prophylaxis is given for several reasons. First, although pre-exposure vaccination does not eliminate the need for additional medical attention after a rabies exposure, it simplifies therapy by eliminating the need for human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and decreasing the number of vaccine doses needed – a point of particular importance for persons at high risk of being exposed to rabies in areas where immunizing products may not be available, and it minimizes adverse reactions to multiple doses of vaccine. Second, it may enhance immunity in persons whose postexposure therapy might be delayed. Finally, it may provide protection to persons with inapparent exposures to rabies.

I am not anti vaccines, per se. I just wanted to let OP know there are some who try to limit unnecessary drugs. I took the group of shots recommended by my Public Health Travel Clinic (USA). As you pointed out there are high risk situations, which I think is not the case here. There is no immunization for simple recklessness. My point was that to take drugs so you can be careless is folly. Thanks for your usual scientific clarification. I do enjoy the facts even when my mind is made up.
