This scam has been going on in Thai tourist bars for years and years. Check, check and check again.

Padding the bill it's done all over the world. If you don't check the bill at the end of any meal when eating out then you deserve to be ripped off!

That's what an Asian wife is for: she'll go through every single bill we get and add up every single figure to make sure it tallies and then call the waiter back to discuss any discrepancies. This allows me to look casually cool and disinterested in such trivial issues. Once she's passed it, she hands it over to me, and I pay. Good system. Works for everyone. Except dodgy waiters.

LOL, deja vu indeed !

However...watch for the super sneaky bill padding. The bill has everything you ordered, no extra dishes, except the prawns in tamarind sauce are 180 Baht and not the 80 Baht on the menu.

Ah, well, you missed the part where I said that I end up paying for it.

Well, yes, she exudes self-confidence. Nothing I could say would shake that or add to it. But nice of you to be concerned for her well-being ...
Jakartaboy, your wife must be a Chinese accountant! There is also bad side of Chinese wife, the pennies pinching type. Hehehe.

For the sake of poor Mermaid's reputation, I should hastily add that she takes me out to dinner and pays the bill almost as often as the other way around ... although, Kohlibong, you DO have a point about her being better at maths than me ... and, as I said, fiduciary supervision and monitoring ...

i haven't experienced rip-offs at restaurants that often. but in terms of saving or losing face, pretty much every thai person i've been out for dinner or drinks with checks through the bill at the end of the evening.
i don't believe there are that many scams going on in restaurants away from the tourist trail, but it seems pretty normal to check the bill. more so than at home.
