checkingirl, I wasn't trying to one-up you, but the Hull consulate is known for being more user-friendly and has all the regulations re-written in clear English, unlike other embassies and consulates which just cut and paste the often badly-translated blather from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

You may well be correct that it's obsolete. If that's the case, I sure wish they'd make a clear statement to that effect. This has to be the number-one stumbling block for people who'd like to use Bangkok as a hub for independent travel in the region.

I think checkingirl hit the nail on the head with her post at #29. It's almost as if she moonlights for the Thai Govt!! Joke.

This country is riddled with laws and rules that are totally impractical to enforce. It would be nice if someone could paste this on the office walls in Hull next time they visit. Clearly, the advice given by the Thai Govt via its consulates is worlds apart from the experience awaiting the poor confused sod who fronts up at Heathrow with his one-way and no visa, which is that it's simply business as usual as long as you've got a clear 6 months on your passport.

Not that there would ever be grounds for accusing the Thai Govt of coercing punters to buy a visa they don't need unless they plan to stay longer than a month! It's doubly dumb during the "free of charge" period - if you're giving a freebie why bother at all? It's not exactly a check or balance is it - people can and do disappear off the radar once they hit Soi Cowboy!

Thanks a lot for very useful insights, checkingirl. I vote you're installed as a sticky at the start of the branch!

To repeat, Thai Airways WILL NOT allow a person to board here in Auckland with a one way ticket and no visa no matter how much time is on a passport.

I thought it was the rule that you have to have 6 months (at least) on your passport regardless of whether you have a visa or not, which country you are travelling to and which airline you fly with.

There's no problem that can't be ignored if we really put our minds to it.

LOL

33# westwood the rules for Aus are not the same and what checkin girl is pointing out is that in Europe the rule is likely being overlooked. She can only do her check in as instructed by the airline and it is up to them whether to allow you to board or not
