This was our initial plan 2 yrs ago, but then was steered away from Phuket because of the rainy season and discouraged by the reports of how busy and congested it is.
2 years later, again in July, I have the opportunity of a 10 day holiday break starting from Singapore.
We have already been to Samui and enjoyed it.
Basically we are looking for a good base to do some excursions, and a quiet piece of the beach.
We usually hire a car so we won't be limited to one area, although driving on difficult roads or congested ones is not a preference with 2 children aged 9 + 12.
