Hello, in late January we have roughly 10 days to spend in Thailand at end of our Cambodia/Laos trip. We are travelling with our two kids aged 10 and 9. We would like to spend at least 5 days in Phuket and the remainder would be a day in BKK and then 4 days at another beach/island location near Phuket. Where do you recommend we go for the other 4 days? Phi Phi, Ko Lanta or Ko Lak----? Kids love swimming whether the beach or pool. Or as we fly out of Kuala Lumpur we could stop off at Penang for a few days?

Alternately, would you just spend all the time on Phuket to limit moving and do more day trips to Phi Phi and other areas? On Phuket we would like to do some day trips and activities as opposed to spending all time at beach. Markets, kyaking, day boat trips; escape rooms and some beaches.

Is Karon a good place to base yourself? Where would you choose to base yourself with kids? I have never been to Phuket but I imagine taxis are cheap and easy to get around the island?

Our budget is up to $80USD per night. Any recommendation of a resort with good sized pools otherwise we will look at an apartment rental (again with a pool in the complex). Thanks.

Beaches on Penang are absolutely nothing to write home about. Couple of days to do other things probably enough.
Phuket used to have the taxi mafia. Don't know about now.
