Hi there!

I'll be in Phuket with my boyfriend on the nights Saturday April 17 and Sunday April 18, and then on Koh Phi Phi on the 19th, 20th and 21st (but I want to stay on Maya Island this night). I know it's a pretty big holiday around this time, and Phi Phi is pretty busy anyway. Do you think it's advisable to book accommodation ahead of time? I don't want to be stuck with only the super-expensive places or the dives left by the time we show up.

We tend towards budget hotels, if that helps any.

Thanks!

Songkran is just before your dates (13-15) but you should be ok for Phuket. Expect to find some places fully booked though.

I doubt that Phi Phi will be affected too much by Songkran.

Thanks.

I know Phi Phi is pretty small and pricey. Is there much chance of turning up only to find all the budget places booked solid?

I went to Phi Phi around the same time two years ago and found ample choices of places to stay. When you get off the ferry there will be some locals trying to tout you for business for some of the accommodations. Just follow one of them to the big board of advertisements and feel free to bargain with them. I stayed at the Hillside resort for a few nights @400baht/night. Met some cool Dutch chicks at that place. But then moved to a place closer to the beach with a nice swimming pool for 750baht/night. I just walked up and bargained for a room. That swimming pool was one of my highlights of my entire trip. I was the American, there was a German dude with his french friend, a Russian, an Italian and his 80 year old father, a Swede, a couple of Australian guys/gals and a Brit all drunk in the pool. 65 years ago we would have all been shooting at each other.
