Hi Have heard mixed reviews about Phi Phi Island. Has anyone stayed there recently. Staying phuket for 5 nights and trying to decide if we do day trip to Phi Phi or stay there for a couple of nights??

Depends what you are into really. Phi Phi can be loud and brash or it can be quiet and sedate. It just depends on what beach you stay. If you stay in town then you will likely be mingling with the flashpacker crowd, drinking until the wee hours and smoking weed on the beach (and pissing in the water). Stay on the quieter beaches and you will be in bed by 9pm with a good book.
Phi Phi is beautiful and it is fun, just pick your spot carefully. For my two cents, I would take Phi Phi over Phuket, but they can both be hell holes at times...

I'm a great one for staying on Phi Phi a night or more. Nice island, spectacular landscape/seascape, good snorkelling and as said above, some beaches are really laid back.
Phuket gets knocked as heavily as Phi Phi. But once again this is mainly from people think Phuket consists of 3 beaches. Sure, if you stay at Patong, Karon or Kata 2/3 days max is enough - if you explore the whole island and surrounds you need much longer.
