Hi and many thank you's to whomever can help, I am in Penang, MY right now and will be headed to Phuket in 2 days with a friend. I'm 30 years old and he's 35. We are both into the bar/pub scene but don't want to be in a place that is overwhelming to the point that there will be booming parties and no sleep til 6-7 AM bc we want to get to all the daytime activities as well. For Phuket, I was thinking Karon just south of Patong so that Patong would be easily accessible but would also be a little away from it. Is that going to be too much of a honeymooner scene for us?
Also wanted to do some surfing while i'm out there. Haven't been able to find out to much about how the waves are but i prefer to surf waves that are head high or smaller. I heard the area south of Karon has waves?
Lastly, we were both reading up on Ko Phi Phi and feeling like that would be another place that would be a must but I read on another thread that Ko Lanta might be a better bet right now due to rough waters and such.

Hope i'm not being too picky and someone can provide suggestions. Thanks!

Patong up the back streets is much quieter if you still want the bars but a bit of peace and quiet

I stay at pj's guesthouse a few times, its good value and dead quiet with massive rooms.

Google it.

Karon has surf but its pretty rough at the moment, i think Kata is a bit sheltered to proper waves u can actually ride.

Apparantly as it's low season lanta is pretty dirty at the moment but the water is quite clear, i would suspect phi phi is worse in terms of dirt...

Kata Yai has a not-over the top bar scene in the south end, lots of good places to stay, a real nice beach which often has good surf (for Thailand) in the present low season and some places on the beach (southern end) to hire boards. Got more info in the first link below.
btw - real bummer getting cheap transport between the beaches on Phuket - all the songthaews go via Phuket town. Gotta use tuk-tuk mafia or taxi mafia.

All Lanta's tourist beaches face west into the present prevailing wind so things are going to get a bit rough on those low season days when it gets blowy. Whereas Phi Phis beaches are largely sheltered in bays or (on the delightful east coast) by the island itself.
A lot of Lanta still shuts down in low season too, not so Phi Phi. and you can't get a boat to Lanta until November - access only by minibus via the vehicle punts.

Tezzas right about the taxi mafia.

You can get Motorcycle taxis for cheaper but for grown adults more than one on a taxi aint too much fun depending how big you are.

Another alternative is to hire a motorcycle yourself if you game.

A safer alternative is to hire a car. The guy i use (his car, not a driver) is 900 Baht, lovely fellow who didnt even examine the car when we returned it.

Can provide links if u like...
