Hey there,

I'm traveling to southern Thailand for a week and don't know whether I should head to Phuket and the Andaman Coast or Koh Samui and the Gulf coast. We will be there in August and don't know which area is better considering the weather, activities, crowds, etc. Any thoughts from people who've been to both would be great! Thanks for reading.

Koh Samui is probably better in August weatherwise.

Better weather on Samui at that time. Samui is friendlier too - Phuket is over-priced and up itself.

Samui most likely will have the better weather during that time of the year. Have a look at my Samui info and weather blog and the archives for August for the last 3 years.

A very good Phuket weather blog can be found on Jamie's Phuket weather blog

I disagree with bangkokboys comments and have found the main beaches eg chaweng and lamai very similar in bad attitudes and prices to those on Phuket. However it's been a few years since I've been to samui and I suggest it's just gotten worse in that regard...

Phuket will have worse weather than samui at that time.

thanks for all the comments! now that i am heading to the Gulf Coast, I can't decide which island and which beach to stay on. My friends and I are mid-20s-early 30s, kinda wild and free spirits, and are looking for relaxation, a lot of fun, and good company. We don't want 5-star accommodations but we don't want to necessarily stay in bare huts either. Somewhere in the middle... a/c, beds, etc. Any thoughts?

if you have any special activities i should check out, let me know about them too!!!

thanks!!!

Chaweng on Samui has plenty of options and a very place popular is the Ark Bar probably straight down your alley and in the thickst and midst of all the action.

Hi,

I too am going to Thailand in August for a my wedding. We are flying into Phuket. One concern I have is the violence that is going on in Bangkok right now. Do you all think it will subside by August. I am just worried about the political violence that is going on there. Please reply with some input. Thanks in advance.

We can only that the situation has been resolved by than, it's lasting long enough as it is right now. On the other hand, at tourist like Phuket or Koh Samui you wouldn't know anything is happening at all unless you watch TV and/or read news papers.
