I will be arriving in Koh Samui on the 22nd July by ferry at around 5pm.
It was a fairly spur of the moment decision going there, having heard some good things.

1) Where is the best place to stay on Koh Samui being a 19 year old solo traveler who wants a mix of meeting new people and relaxing. I don't particularly want to go to a crazy "party" place but I do want to meet, socialise and have some fun?

2) How do I get to the place you recommend if my ferry gets in at 5pm?

3) Do I need to book in advance or just turn up?

There'll be songthaews hanging around at any of the ferry piers. One of the drivers will direct you to one going your way. They do have a fixed price up until 6pm so no need to negotiate. I only know the price to Maenam.

NO need to book anywhere...

Songthaew's are truck taxi's..... Stay in some place like Lamai....mix of everything and the markets are great for eating, plus i think the beach is much better than chewang. Cost is 60 baht, (or was 2 weeks ago) for a songthaw to Lamai....

You can also get a taxi prepaid to Lamai on the ferry for 150 baht but no need!! Private taxi is 500-700 baht so the truck taxi is the best deal. Don't get confused with the songthaws...just ask Lamai lamai??? IF looking at island from water, Chewang truck taxis will go left and Lamai taxi's will go right...Don't worry about this, it's just shortest route. ....Taxi about 25 mintues......

If you decide to rent a scooter/motorcycle whilst there , just UP the hill from the Lamai post office is PIPS, run by a big guy named Richard, a UK guy who will not rip you off. He's honest and will not rip you off if you dump the bike in the same way Thais often do....he does take your passport as a deposit which is the norm... Get a honda DREAM or WAVE, not the newer Echo's, at 100 baht a day, and enjoy the island.

Thanks for the info! Lamai it is then!
I'm currently in a hostel in another country and someone just told me that they came from Koh Samui and that there aren't really any hostels with dorm rooms and there are only really hotels. Is this true and if so will it be really hard to meet people?

don't worry...tons of places to stay....years ago i stayed at magic resort.. it's still there!! as i reminisced and went to look last month. At about 12 dollars a night on agoda and a bunch of other booking places, just book one night then look around.. you won't find much cheaper and it's within walking distance of everything....Direct across the street is a cheap thai restaurant as well.... good luck...chuk dee kap

Dont be put off by the word "resort". Theres many on Koh Samui that arent the luxurious type but more a place with bungalows.
Theres not only hotels, theres plenty of guest houses at the cheap end of the market plus various other types apart from hotels on the Islands.
