I'm looking at the Tigerline ferries:

and it looks like the journey from Koh Phi Phi to Langkawi takes the entire day since it stops at a multitude of islands along the way (8:30am dep. and arriving 18:00 in Langkawi). Is there a more direct and faster route? perhaps via Satun?

The ferry is for tourists who want to island hop and have the scenery (and pay for it). Bus from Krabi to Satun would be way cheaper and take around five hours by the direct route. If the bus goes via Hat Yai add 100 km and another couple hours to the journey. Also consider there will likely be delays and guesswork making the connections between Phi Phi ferry - Krabi bus and again if via Hat Yai, and you might not make the last ferry from Satun to Langkawi same day. So the merits of taking the ferry also include the fact that it's "door to door".

thanks, I had looked at going to Krabi but it looked like it was a bit north of Koh Phi Phi and a bit of backtracking but I guess it would still be faster depending on schedules. I will check the ferry and bus schedules via Krabi

If speed is the issue, would you consder flying from Phuket to Langkawi?

decided to skip Langkawi altogether and going direct onwards to Penang, Koh Phi Phi to Krabi ferry in the eve, overnight in Krabi and then busing it to Penang next morning at 7am, should reach Penang at 16:00.
