I'll be in Thailand next month and will have six days to spend between Phi Phi and Railay. Does two days on Phi Phi and four at Railay sound about right? I'll probably spend the last night in either Ao Nang or Krabi Town so I'll have an easy time getting to the airport for a morning flight. I'm also wondering about getting around on foot at these two places. Will I be able to walk to all of the beaches on Phi Phi or will I have to take a long-tail to get to some? Same question concerning Railay. For example, will I have any problem walking from Tonsai back to East Railay late at night? Thanks.

I've got a fair bit on each place including walking around, maps of same, plus pix HERE might help your planning.

More specifically to your question - one of the most commong walks on PP is from town across to Long Beach - takes a leisurely 40 minutes. The longest walk you can do is from town to Laem Tong, a real nice beach area up on the north east tip of PP. If you go via the VIEWPOINT and other nice east coast beaches like Ao Toh Koh, Rantee, Relax Bay, Loh Bakeo you are looking at maybe 2 hours plus stops for swims, beer in beachside restaurants etc. Some mega steep slopes.

Ton Sai to East Railay at night. I have done this plenty of times both via over the low headland to West Railay and by the high saddle tracks direct to East Railay. But never at night. Yep, it would be a tough walk. If I had to do it I'd take the former - with a good torch. And of course scout it out in daylight.

Oh yeah, the best PP walking maps are in the TRIP REPORTS section of that link.

I don't agree that PP is most overrated, it is really nice and despite big numbers of people you don't feel that on the beach.
Railay is differentr, less people but also less restaurants and other options. I think that prices are bit higher than on PP.
But there is a beautiful beach on Railey (Phra Nang) and I really recommend visiting both places.

The beaches on PHI PHI away from town are cool. They are pretty laid back outside of high season. I was there last new years so FEb will be more relaxed.

But the waters are dirty!

No they are not always dirty. Time and tide. Have you ever found a beach that is popular in Thailand that is crystal blue like the Caribbean sea 24 hours a day? No. The OP will relax and enjoy what he or she wants. Regardless of you hating on stuff. There are beaches away from town that are not too crowded. But some people want to meet others so......

Beaches on the laid back east coast of PP have water as nice as the best Thailand locations. And the beaches themselves are post card.
Long Beach in the far south east is good.
The far west end of town beach Ton Sai up against the soaring headland is surprisingly good.

Thanks for replies. I would stay on the east side of Phi Phi except that I'm planning on doing a couple tours that I'll have to be up very early for and I don't want to have to hike across the island at 5 am. I know this has been asked a thousand times before (I've read mostly all of the posts), but does anyone have any recommendations for a place to stay on Phi Phi? I would like somewhere close, but not too close to town and preferably under 1000 baht. I was looking at Garden Home but their rates are a little more than I'd like. I'm so sick of reading reviews that I'm thinking of just showing up without booking anything at this point.
