Hey TTers,

I am planning to spend new years eve with a couple of friends on ko pha-ngang. Since none of the budget places take bookings, our only real option is to rock up a few days in advance to secure a place. The only problem with this is that my flight to bangkok is booked in to arrive on the 29th in the morning, and the earliest i'll probably get to the island is the (early) morning of the 30th (i plan to fly to surat thani as all the flights to koh samui are booked that day). is this far too late? one of my friends will be in the country long before I am: is it possible for her to go in early and book for us (even if that means paying for our stay in advance?). Or are we just better off biting the bullet and finding a place that takes bookings for a more expensive price?

any insight you can give me would be awesome

thanks,

matt

I have personally showed up on the island on the day of NYE and found a room within 30 minutes of arrival for the price of 200 baht per night. This is not recommended if you don't know the island, as it will take you considerably longer.

That might be our only option if we can't find a place to book! Only i guess we'd be rocking up a day earlier that you did. Any hot tips for finding accomodation quickly? Good areas to look? Will probably be risking it all and catching the night ferry the previous night to get in about 7-8ish in the morning to have a crack if worse comes to worse.

Well, I would head to Cookies and ask for help from a local. I guess you don't know them, but if they happen to be full (I am 99.9% sure they will be) they will help you find something in the area. If it is all full in the immediate area, rent a bike and drive towards Haad Rin. Just pop into all of those bungalows along the way. Eventually, you should find something. If all else fails, and if they are still open ... J Seaview Bungalows is always my emergency backup (I think they were trying to sell the place though). Go left at 7-11 in Ban Tai, and head up as if you were going to Thong Nai Pan. At the top of the first big hill are the bungalows. If you still can't find anything press on back to Thong Sala and head to the NW part of the island. You should be able to find something out in say Haad Salad or Choluklum!!!!
