Hi there,
I had a wonderful time on Phi Phi in the spring of 2004 which of course was the year of the Tsunami.
Has anybody been there this season (2007) and would like to comment on the experience?
I have a guidebook which is highly negative about visits to Phi Phi at this time and maintains that the infrastructure is far from having been restored.
Maybe there is somebody out there who visited Phi Phi recently and also had also known it in pre-tsunami times.
Your comments and suggestions are highly appreciated...
brgds
Michael

noisy, small, dusty, scorching hot and filled with anooying 17 year olds and misquitoes.
not too mention construction everywhere.
i was there in june and didn't like it one bit:)

I was there only 4 weeks ago, my opinion is this; probably the most beautiful place I've visited in Thailand, I've been there 3 times now in the past year for a few days at a time. By day its just an amazing place to be, so tranquil, peaceful, and beautiful.
By night is another story...... This is when all the 'idiots' come out on their drinking binges. Dont get me wrong, I like going out and hitting the bars, but most of the people are just way over the top and acting like fools....... mainly the English I'm ashamed to say oh and the Swedish (guys). But it is great fun, all the fire shows and live music on the beach is great!
Apache bar is probably the biggest bar on the island I would have thought mainly due to the location, and plays some good music.
I was very surprised to meet so many English guys and girls though that were 'hiding' on the island, mainly working at the bars, 1 guy I spoke to said he came last yr on a 30 day visa and just decided to stay on.......... very clever. More or less the same situation with a couple of girls that I spoke to, although they had lost their plane tickets......... months and months ago.
If you walk up to the view point and then down the other side you will see the other side of the island which most tourists dont ever venture, huge lizards all over the place and various wildlife....... including huge mossies! Watch out!
The bay is the best beach I have ever been to, water temperature at about 40 degrees celcius, no I'm not joking, seriously, it was like a hot bath, you actually sweat when swimming.
Enjoy.

I visited pre tsunami twice and twice since - things are pretty much up and running - the place is just as beautiful as ever. And if you don't stay in Ton Sai-Lo Dulum, you can find some pretty laid back places.
One thing I did notice in my latest March trip was the spike in bungalow prices.
I have written a fair bit in the second link below.

Hi Michael
I thought I would write a reply to you as I've just got back from Thailand about 2 weeks ago and I was on Phi Phi for just over a week. I have to say that Phi Phi was my favourite place that I went to on our trip through Thailand. I was a bit apprehensive, like you, at first because guide books did not have a great deal of positive things to say about the place, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. There are parts of the island, especially in Ton Sai, which are a bit run down and at times there is a bit of a bad whiff every now an then. There is some construction under way, but not as much as you might think. Despite the odd bad smell and some construction, it is by far the most beautiful place I visited in my RTW trip and the people there are so friendly, which you will know anyway, having already been there. It is inspiring to see them getting their island back up and running and I found you can overlook the building work for that reason alone.
I hope I have been of some help, and I hope you have a great time if you end up goin! Im very jealous! hehe!

ps Tezza is right about the bungalow prices!!
One of the places that is really much more enjoyable in low season that when it is busy like in December/January.

Was wondering the same myself. I went in September 2001 and the island seemed full to bursting point. Was wondering if it would be any quieter now in September?
Also, I had a massive problem with mossies in Phi Phi. I don't know whether Thai mossies are worse than Malaysian mossies or whether Phi Phi mossies are the worse Thai mossies, but I had such a bad reaction, I ended up having to go to Phi Phi hospital to have them drained.
Has anyone else noticed that Phi Phi has some kind of particularly aggressive mossie problem or is it just me?
