RE# CHANCHAO -

"I LOVED my 80 baht bungalow on the beach in Ko Tao 16 years ago, but now with a wife and two kids, I kinda-sorta do need a bungalow with somewhat of a bathroom and air-conditioning, and a pool "
---------------------------
Thats a valid point . But even 16 years ago you could find upmarket accomodation with aircon and pool etc in abundance at Phuket and Samui , so the choice was always there . But now everywhere is going upmarket and those who do like the traditional bungalows have fewer and fewer opitions . They have lost Phuket , Samui , Krabbi , Phi Phi , Increasing Lanta and Ko Chang and even Ko Payam is going more upmarket .
And one could ask why do those who prefer upmarket accom require it at Thong Nai Pan at Ko Phangan also . There are so may options at Samui , why do they need to have Thong Nai Pan turned into another Samui like beach ?. Where does this endless duplication end ?.

Geeting back to Thailand being expensive , you can live very cheaply in the north and even at degraded Thong Nai Pan at Phangan there are accomodation for 300 baht or less. Acceptable rooms in Bangkok readily avialble for under 300 baht.

And look at this picture even Bottle Beach at Ko Phangan doesn't escape having a concrete hotel right on the beach.

That's at Bottle Beach Dave?????? (Hangs head in despair....)

As concrete hotels go, that one is actually fairly unobtrusive and doesn't really detract from the beauty of Bottle Beach. Agree that it's an unwelcome trend though.

cfders; 300 for a Spanish room and 40 for a Thai one? Oh! It seems that one of us has wandered into the wrong forum. Sorry, I thought Lonely Planet was more for budget travelers, curious adventurers and other restless souls not for business travel/holiday makers. Ok, I'll get my coat.

Kun#ko: Obviously not that happy, or I wouldnt currently be wasting time replying to pompus symantic posts.

"Sure, Bleak, 1200b is a lot for a room, but where are you eating for less than 60b?

Samara "

1200 baht to 3000 baht is mid range in Thailand.

Less than that is lower end in Bangkok and the islands.

Less than 60 baht is easy to find. lots of places have 30/40 baht meals.
