#9 I'm not doubting anything. I just don't see the practical point of memorizing or carrying around a mug-shot of someone, especially for a "scam" as lame as "give me some money".
And to repeat ... it's much more practical to advise on common sense in general, and then apply the common sense principles. Otherwise, why limit to just one dodgy French person? I bet a person could wander around Bangkok for weeks without ever dealing with the person - maybe months (not that the average person stays for more than a few days). If the the principle is to warn about known particular criminals, then better to carry around a file of a few thousand panhandlers around SE Asia, just to be on the safe side.
I can see it now: take photos of people you see, load them into a laptop with face-recognition software and criminal data-base, as a security check.
