We are taking the train and ferry from Bangkok to Ko Samui to stay in a hotel on Thong Yang beach. Train arrives Surat Thani and then we need to catch bus to Don Sak to catch either either Raja ferry or Seatran ferry, Raja docks closes to hotel.

1) Is there a particular bus to catch at Surat Thani
2) Can the bus be caught outside Surat Thani railway station
3) Where do we get the ticket, is it cheaper in advance or on the day
4) Can we get a return bus ticket as we are aiming to be back in Surat Thani to catch the 10.40am train to Bangkok coup[le of days later.
5) Which is the better ferry service

We will arrive at Surat Thani from Bangkok at 06.30am

When you buy your train ticket (and buy it at the station, not from an agent) just go to counter #2 at Hualamphong and buy the combined train/bus/ferry ticket. If you want the night train (sleeper) buy it as soon as you can in advance, just to be sure of getting one or getting an upper and lower bunk together. When you get off the train, there'll be a guy directing you to the bus. You can't miss him. It's all much more straightforward than you think - you literally can't go wrong. When you want to come back, just buy the same combo ticket from any travel agent in Samui.

Mozzziebite, thank you for your great advice. Just one thing I did not add, I have already purchased rail tickets from BKK to Surat Thani and Surat Thani back to BKK but I could not see on the Thai railway site how to get tickets through to Samui. So we still have to get bus and ferry tickets when we get to Surat Thani to get over to Samui and again when we come back from Samui to Surat Thani, can you advise ?
