Hi,

I will be travelling to Koh Pha Ngan for 3 weeks in August with my wife & two young children, ages 5 & 2. I was after some advice on the best beaches & accommodation options for family travel.

Firstly, we are looking for quiet beaches that still have a selection of restaurants/shops but are away from the masses & with snorkelling off the beach. I was thinking Mae Head beach in the north for snorkelling around Ko Ma & Than Sadet on the east coast. Ideally we will be staying at 2 or 3 places during our stay.

Secondly, is it necessary to book accommodation before arriving? If we were travelling without children then just turning up & looking round to find the best accommodation would be fine. However, with small ones in tow this isn't very practical & the number of family rooms are limited. Our budget per night is £30/1500baht, but would prefer to spend less than £20/1000baht.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Yes I believe Ko Ma has the best snorkelling on KPG. Not sure if there is any family-friendly accommodation there though. You will find more options on nearby Hat Salad.

But, really, for snorkelling that time of year I would be tempted to head to Ko Tao and visit the quiet east coast - have a look at Hin Wong, Ao Leuk and Sae Daeng . . .

These are the areas we are considering with our (older) children about the same time as you.

Hi,

Many thanks for the info. Ko Tao was one of our options so I will check it out in more detail!

Is it worth booking ahead due to the limited availability of family bungalows?

Cheers.

I would say yes - two months I ago booked an upmarket family bungalow at Hat Salad for August (for a 3 night 'splurge') - they only have two right on the beach and the other was already booked. July/August is high season in that part of Thailand - especially for families as its school hols throughout the northern hemisphere . . .

Pink, isn't it the Australians having school hols at this time of year?

Sam, you're an Ozzie aren't you? Are your kids on hols in August?

Whoops, my mistake, school holidays fall in July this year.
