So after Chaing Mai and Koh Samui, we want to bring our 3 kids (4, 6 and 6) to the jungle...Khao Sok sounds interesting... This will be my third time in Thailand, my wife's second, and the kids first time out of Canada This part of the trip will be in the last week -ish of a month long trip

  1. Coming from Koh Amui and then flying back to Bangkok fro most likely Surat Thani - what would be the best way to get to and from the park? We are trying to keep costs down when possible

  2. seeing as we are a family of 5, I am trying to keep the cost for accommodations and tours low and the quality and duration of any tours can be a bit lower - any recommendations? We are open to both jungle treks and lake tours, as long as they aren't too difficult for kids

  3. anyone that knows the area well, I would love to hear what you suggest

Kids are too young for serious trekking. The month is important too cause that park gets more rain than other places. If you want to keep costs down Id skip Samui and Khao Sok. The tours in Samui are double the price of tours in Krabi and hotel prices are higher as well.

Khao Sok has 2 sections being the lake area and the jungle area. They are a long way apart.

Chiang Mai and Krabi would be good choices for a family.

Yea, I'm starting to see that the prices are much more than I expected in the area

Here's an idea of cost and route from Samui to Khao Sok.

Samui to Khao Sok

Khao Sok has great bungalows on the lake - can your kids swim? - there are long tail boat trip amongst the Karst limestone in the lake. There are also plenty of gentle walks to waterfalls etc. they should get to glimpse a bit of wildlife, monkeys deer etc.

From Khao Sok you could look at flying back to BKK from Phuket too - you're over halfway there from Samui.

If you don't fly back, there are other NPs en route. Sam Roi Yot - has a beach with resorts and a few caves to look at.
Kaeng Krachan - is the biggest NP in Thailand, there is a lake, camping boat rides and some adventure trails of varying degrees of arduousness.
There's also a 4x4 drive to the top, where you can camp or return the same day.
(you probably know that just about all NPs hire out camping stuff...tents, bedding etc.)
The route from Suratthani is interesting by road if you make detours e.g to the NPs or the coast. (car hire is best)
It can also be done by sleeper train.
Flights from Surat to BKK are much cheaper than from Samui.
