SONKRAN WAS SERIOUSLY THE FUNNEST EVENT I HAVE EVERY TAKEN PART IN. ITS ONLY BEEN A YEAR SINCE I WAS THERE BUT IT SEEMS SO LONG AGO.

FOR ALL OF YOU LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE IN THAILAND (CHAING MAI IS THE BEST) FOR THIS FESTIVAL GET READY FOR THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE. DONT BE AFRAID OF THE MOAT WATER EVERYBODY IS GETTING SPLASHED BY THE SAME SUBSTANCE. IN ADDITION DONT ONLY HANG OUT IN THE TYPICAL TOURIST SPOTS EXPERIENCE A WATER FIGHT WITH TRUE THAI'S.

LIKE MYSELF, I AM SURE ALL OF YOU WHO PARTAKE IN THIS EXPERIENCE WILL NEVER FORGET HOW FUN AND ENJOYABLE IT IS.

THROW A BUCKET OF WATER FOR ME ALL!!!!

I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!

I also hate caps, but on the topic of Songkran it somehow seems appropriate. :)

I think the first time anyone experiences Songkran it will be remembered all the life, the first time I heard about it i thought how can throwing water at each other for nearly a week be fun ? but after the 1st day I must have spent about 2000bhat on giant water guns, I went to Kaoson Road in Bangkok and around the Kings Palace it was unbelivable how many people turned out and the scores of pickups driving around with kids and adults alike with barrals of water drenching anyone they can see.
The only people I seen spoil it was some western tourists who got angry because they got wet my advice to them is dont go to Thailland during the festival as its their New Year and if you do then remeber when it Rome do as the Romans do !

Last Year I went to Sing Buri out in the sticks with my wife who is also Thai and we drove around on a motorcycle with our guns getting chased by gangs of others on bikes who wanted to get the "Farang" wet ,quite alot of them had never seen a westerner before and thought it was a novelty but it was all good fun, even the houses that dont have any neighbours sit outside their home waiting for hours for someone to walk by or drive by just to throw some water at them !

Excellent festival, but remeber dont wear your best clothes and put your money and your mobile in a plastic bag because YOU WILL GET WET !!!!

not a few of my Thai friends dislike Songkran for the same reason that grown up, non - bedazzled human beings from the West dislike Christmas. It's OK if you're a kid. If you're not, it can be something of a chore. If you felt obliged to take time off work, which you hardly ever get, to travel from Phuket to Lampang to see family who, if truth be told, you don't especially like, then you might have a different view.

Given that I once had a bucket of water poured on my head by the teller in a Khon Kaen branch of the Thai Farmer Bank I don't think there is any real way of avoiding getting your money wet.

I was putting my cash in my wallet when I looked up to see the delightfull aspect of the Teller's legs, she was standing on her desk, then woosh! she thew the water over the top of the partition and I was drenched.

Much to the merriment of all in the bank.

And of course then came the disarming wai.

This year I want to go with my family to Mai Khao Beach in the far North of Phuket where there is a turtle release ceremony. Probably also a quick visit to the temple and a drive around with the car windows tightly sealed. Then a private waterfight with my kids in the garden. I'll let them win.
