Hi,

New to the Forum, looking for some information on Thailand. I've done some research already, but find myself at a dead end regarding some of the information.

To start, a short description of the planned trip. I'll be travelling to Krabi Province for some rock climbing between the 14th and the 22nd of December. I'm not all that experienced, started a year ago 3 times a week in the gym, and two weeks sport climbing in Italy. I red-point around the 6a-6b level, looking to break 6c (who knows, maybe 7a) on this trip. Planned to spend around 12000 Baht maximum for these 9 days (wish I could stay longer). Afterward, I'll be heading down to Penang to meet up with Family for Christmas.

Ok, now the Questions...

Accomodation:

-Since I'll be staying for a total of 8 nights only, split between three places, does it even make sense to prebook accomodation, or is it possible to 'walk in' and get a place to sleep for a decent price? My budget is 500 Baht/night (less is better). Is there generally a minimum number of nights you have to stay if you book ahead (I know Basecamp Tonsai requires a 10 day stay)? Also, I do not have a credit card, does this automatically exclude my from prebooking anything?

-Any recommendations as to where to stay are welcome. At the moment I'm looking at The Forest Resort in Tonsai, and Namtok Bungalow on Yao Noi (is that anywhere near the The Mountain Shop ?). Don't have anything for Phi Phi yet.

Climbing:

-As I'll be travelling alone, I'm in need of a climbing partner. I know oppinions vary on the subject, but is it best to pre-arrange that, or find someone once I'm there? Got my own equipment (60m rope, a dozen draws, some other stuff) and am also looking to do some multi-pitch.

-Any tips on good climbing areas are appreciated (preferably rebolted). I'll definitely be visiting:
-123 Wall, Low Tide Wall, and Candlestick Wall in Tonsai/Railay, plus the climbing available on Tonsai beach.
-Tonsai Tower, Ao-Ling Wall, Hua-Ling, and Dinking Wall on Phi Phi
-Grateful Wall, The Watchtower, and maybe The Hang (don't know the grades here) on Yao Noi

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks for now,

Alex

E-mail Jeff or Fiona and ask for recommended climbing advice in the region.

Does anyone recommend P P for rock climbing? I've never seen such.

King Climbers does (http://www.railay.com/railay/climbing/climbing_phiphi_update.shtml), apparently some interesting multi-pitch stuff as well. Didn't want to spend more than two nights there. Same goes for Yao Noi.

I guess my main question is whether to prebook accomodation in Tonsai for the whole 8 nights, and spend extra for the nights on Phi Phi and Yao Noi, or whether not to book anything, hoping that I'll get a place to sleep once I'm there, somewhat risky with it being the touristy season and all? To be honest, I'd prefer not to prebook anything if the situation allows, as it means I can be more spontaneous about checking out the Phi Phi and Yao Noi climbing areas, and spending an extra night if I like. Any advice on that is probably most useful to me at the moment. The rest I'll manage to figure out once I'm there.

Thanks for the replies so far, and any advice on the budget accomodation situation during the high season is greatly appreciated.

I'm surprised, but then, they'll try to make money anywhere in LOS.
Certainly I wouldn't bother with P P.

Ton Sai is always your best bet for budget accomodation, as the beach is crap, which keeps the flash packers away.
You can still easily cross to Railay.

So you think getting accomodation on Tonsai without a reservation should be no problem?

No problem at all

Ok, so I've decided I won't be making any reservstions in advance. The rest I'll figure out once I'm there. Thanks again for all the helpful replies.

Cheers,

Alex

I'm sure that some places on Ton Sai won't even be on the net. It's just a question of being prepared to walk around and look, or if you'd like somewhere for the first night at least, ask a travel agent in Krabi or Ao Nang to book something for you before jumping on the boat.

Interesting idea. On the other hand, I'll be arriving in Tonsai around 0830, so got plenty of time to look for a place to crash. I'll decide once I get there. Thanks anyway!
