Hi

I am going to Thailand next week and just called my bank (nationwide) to advise that I'll be using my card out there in the ATMs. She advised that my card will only work in chip and pin ATMs, not magnetic strip ones, but it is not possible to tell from the ATM itself whether or not it is chip and pin!! I have used my card in a lot of different countries including Thailand and it has never been a problem, but she advised this new security measure has come in the last 6 months.

Has anyone been to Thailand (partic. on the islands) in the last few months and had problems using a nationwide visa debit card??

Thanks
Caroline

I'm curious how this will turn out for you. I just returned from SE Asia including Thailand a month ago. One of my cards which I've used overseas with the magnetic strip, I've had for over 10 years. When I returned home a new card with the magnetic strip and the chip was waiting for me. The new card has the same number as my old card. I used it for the first time this week at a local bank and it worked. Even my pin # from the previous card transferred over. Would it work outside the country? I'm not 100% sure but I expect it would....My card is from a Canadian bank.

Hi,

Just back from there within the last week. Yes had one or two ATM's that would not work with my Nationwide debit chip and pin card, this has always been the case for me with the old magnetic strip card anyway. Being a bit wary of using my card abroad I always use an ATM attached to a bank, so if I lose it I can just go in and get it back. This brings me to the point I was going to make, you can always go inside and get a cash advance on the card. This will also save you the unacceptable 150 baht atm charge imposed by the greedy banks not so long ago. In most places during your travels you will have the option of so many ATM's/Banks you will have no problems. If you think you are going to be in a place where there may be very few or none just stock up with a little currency beforehand. I had no problems in 4 months recently and I am sure you will not.

Enjoy your travels.
