Hi
Can only tell You about last year. Last year celebrations were canceled. Because of the bombs in Bangkok.

I have to dispute that #2. I was there last year (2006) and the place was jumping. Most hotels had celebrations and there were parties everywhere. There was talk of cancelling some things because of the Bangkok bombs but that never eventuated. They had a large fireworks display near the river and people were lighting lanterns all night. The sky was full of them. I am going back again for new years eve this year.

yeah total bullshit. The bombs in BKK disrupted some of the planned events in Chiang Mai but there was still plenty of New Year celebrations. #1 obviously wasn't there.

I remember watching the news at home (central Chiang Mai) and then walking to Tha Phe gate just before midnight, wondering how many of the tousands in the crowd even knew about the bombs in BKK. As others have said there was a plan to "cancel" the countdown party, but it never materialised. If you want a big public celebration, go to Tha Phe Gate, the Three Kings monument, or along the Ping river near the White Chedi (although being next to the US Embassy you might want to distance yourself a bit).

I was in that rooftop bar opposite the Gate. Part of the top floor collapsed and about 20 people dropped ten feet, but no-one was hurt. A cute little red fire engine came out to watch.

I was near Thapea gate. And there were supposed to be a lot of things going oin there. Well there was nothing at twelve o clock. Just a lot of people wondering why there was nothing.I have not been near the river or in the hotels.
