I would recommend Deejai Backpacker very good hostel for solo and group travelers and it's very cheap £3-4 a night!!

You don't pay more breaking train journeys because all fares are distance-based - but as stated, you need separate tickets (which you CAN buy all at one time if you wish). So Chiang Mai to Bangkok is the same as the sum of any two (or more ) journeys on the same route for seats in the same class of travel. Varies if you bring sleeper berth supplements into the equation, but from somewhere so close as Ayutthaya that won't apply - cheap as chips, as stated.

July can be a pretty time of the year in Chiang Mai as it is lush due to the rains. However as others have said it could rain lots or not at all. Chiang Mai is a large City and has major road links and rail to elsewhere in Thailand, chances of being stranded are slim to non. Air tickets can be bought for cheap to BKK if necessary at short notice. Thai Lion have tickets for less than 1000bt. Train is a good option.
