besides flying, are there other options where you can travel to hanoi from bangkok? i appreciate you can break the journey up using different methods, but can u take a bus all the way there once you've got your visa, or get a package from a travel agent?

also, has anyone got experience of paying a travel agent to get you a quick visa? is it still really dodgy? or can anyone recomend a travel agent where they did it?

thank you....

To get to Hanoi you'd either be going through Laos or Cambodia. Both countries offer visa- on- arrival at the border.
Don't know if you can get an overland package, ask an agent :)
Check around for the embassy price, the agent shouldn't be charging that much more, maybe 5- 10US$. I don't use them.

... Ya , from Pnom Penh you can go to Hochi ming - Saigon and up to Hanoi . Fast buses available in Pnom Penh ... About 6hrs ..
Can cross from Lao too and there is a train from Yunnan - South west China ... Jinghong to Hanoi But you probably have to get your vietnam visa in Jinghong or Bkk ... Check, because it is not a beaten track but the train exist .... good luck

Never heard of that train. There used to be a train from Kunming to Hekou on the border, it hasn't run for a couple of years now.

Sure, through an agent (and he'll send it to Kunming for the stamp...). Never heard of a consulate there...

QUICKEST ex BKk to HAN, is: via laos, VTE, use the daily overnite Direkt Khao Sarn bus to VTW, sabaidee tour, can do Lao visum on border, and can leave same evening ex VTE in bus to han, taking some 20-24 hrs, total 2 nightsday in between, total cost like 40US$ for bus30US for lao visum= makes airdelaysia still cheaper!
