Between Krabi & Koh Samui

I have booked return tickets arriving and departing from Krabi but my trip is to go to Koh Samui.
As my trip is too long, I wish to make my trip shorter; so I will either keep the arriving ticket or the departure one.
I will need to buy one more ticket but thinking should I get one for either arriving or departing Samui or get another one for Krabi.
The Samui one will cost me more.

My question is how much time and cost is needed to travel between Krabi & Samui ? Must I pass Surat Thani ?
Is it easier to go from Krabi airport to Samui or Samui to Krabi airport ?
