"Hard to buy water or soft drink without plastic." For decades soft drinks came in glass bottles that were reused or easily recyled. The issue with coffee, apart from the fact that you can't recyle the cup is that it is almost obligotory to have one with you at all times. If yoiu can live with being a producer of that waste then go for it. People shouldn't then complain about the level of rubbish on beaches.

Plastic is recycled and has been for many years. Western nations have major recycling processes. Thailand has a long way to go to catch up.

Part of Nai Yang is National Park, guess that's where the entrance fee comes from.

Yes, that'd be it. Unless it has changed lately, non-Thais get in to the National Park area for free if walking and have to pay if driving inu. There are plenty of similar beach a few hundred metres down the coast where you can wallow in garbage for free.

I have a ordinary plastic water bottle that I've been refilling for 2 years!

I normally keep one for 3 months then recycle it and start on a new one.

Thais prefer to throw them anywhere after one use.

I am currently staying at Kata Beach. I walk the beach everyday and have been dismayed at the huge amount of rubbish I pass. I pick up a bag full of plastic bits and pieces each time I go. I watch the workers clean the beach outside club Med and am horrified to see that much of what is cleared is biodegradable leaf litter!! I feel so sad for Thailand (and the world) when I face this pollution in what could be a pristine paradise.
