It is really hard to answer your question without knowing who you are and what you enjoy. A 25yo single is looking for different things than a couple traveling with kids.

Thanks for your responses so far. Here's a little about myself to help you. I am a 25 year old male and will be arriving in Bangkok on my own as the first destination of my travelling in April. Not too interested in being stoned and getting tattoos - beer garden and stroll sounds more up my street! I guess I just want some suggestions of how to get my bearings, and get an idea of the mood of the city, find good food & drink, and places to meet fellow travellers, and also mix with the locals.

I intend to spend about 4 months travelling around Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam... so, not sure how long I'll be in Bangkok for...

go to the top of the byorke (sp?) tower.
get lost in chinatown.
get a few beers in suan loom (lumpini park).
get lost in jatujak market.
go to the jim thompson house.
walk into nana plaza (sukhumvit soi 4).
meet fellow travelers on khao san road (ksr).
go to a thai boxing match.
sit some food stalls until you meet a cool thai person.
walk down soi cowboy (asoke bts stop).
take a boat at sunset from the saphan taksin bts stop to the phra attit boat pier.
have lunch on the top of river view guest house in chinatown.
go to the brick bar on ksr.
drink after hours on the roof at sin bar on soi 4.

if you research any of these and they seem up your alley, pm me. i've got plenty more.

Chinatown is a great place to wander for a few hours.
