Hi
I'm arriving in Bangkok on the 10th morn, and have around a week to spend.
Am planning on flying in to Phuket via the morn flight, and then spend around 4 days (till the 14th night) in Phuket and the nearby islands.

So far have narrowed down on Phi Phi and Krabi, will be giving both a day each before returning to Phuket as I fly out from there.

I am on a budget, but since am travelling with parents, I need to ensure that the journey is comfortable too. You know how it is- They'd rather take the car than a bus, and wouldn't mind spending a bit more for a hotel that is 'safer' and more comfortable. Even then, I'd wanna spend max 2000 bahts/day.

So, my questions are...

  1. Are 4 days enough for the 3 places? I know its cutting it close, but we've decided to divide our activities too, so if we go snorkelling in Phuket, we'd do something else in Phi Phi and try something else in Krabi.

  2. I'm a little confused about the travel time, how much time does it usually take? It says I can reach Phi Phi within 2 hours by boat, but is that really how it works?

  3. Lastly, any reccomendations? Hotels (within the range of 1500 bahts, restaurants, shopping, water sports?

This is the first time we're going to Thailand, and as Im planning the trip for my parents too, I want to ensure that its memorable! Thanks a ton for all your help :)

Look, most people will say 4 nights is not enough - but if you have your heart set on seeing all 3, yep, you can do it. But it won't be all that relaxing, it means some places you only have a day, and when you take out the time spent packing, travelling, unpacking - only part of a day.
I'd tend to pick 2 places - say Phuket and Phi Phi - I reckon Phi Phi is the better option because it takes less time to access from Phuket. And yep, unless the seas are real rough, 2 hours transfer is normal. Plus time from you Phuket resort to the pier of course.

Now if you really want to see Krabi, you could get a limo/taxi direct from Phuket airport (not cheap), spend some time on Railay and then catch the ferry to Phi Phi, then on the last day catch the ferry to Phuket and go directly to the airport.
Sometimes not a good idea to depend on a ferry on the last day heading for a flight, in low season, when on rough days they get slowed or cancelled (latter is very very rare on the Krabi-Phuket-Phi Phi runs - pretty good ferries)

I have a page on all 3 locactions in the first link below which mentions accommodation, transfers, has my own experiences and some pix. Perhaps you will see something you like.

Thanks Tezza,
I have been through your site, which is how i narrowed in on Phi Phi, else I was looking at Krabi only :)

I was thinking of the same thing, and I feel it'll be better if I just go to 2 places instead of 3. Basically, I want to go to the picture perfect beaches that they advertise for Thai tourism, which is why I picked Krabi too, heard its really beautiful.

Is Krabi very different from Phi Phi, or can I give it a miss?

I'm also very interested in snorkelling and seeing those lovely caves they have in the water... So, Phi Phi or Krabi?

For snorkelling off the beach, Phi Phi is the go. For seascape/landscape they are probably about equal. The Pang Nga Bay daytrip out of Phuket has more caves thru limestone stacks etc - although Phi Phi Ley and some of the islands just off Railay are not bad for limestone undercuts at water level, and Phi Phi Ley has the birdsnest cave of course. Plus "The Beach".
