South-East Asia Mainland

Can anyone recommend a guesthouse that is in an older building in the historical area of Hoi An? I know of the expensive one that Michael Caine stayed in during filming of The Quiet American... and actually stayed there once. I was curious to know if anyone knows of others, since we'll be stopping up there again next month.

Hi I read something somewhere about a train ride (not one continous one like the Trans-Siberian) about the two furthest points/stations for a train journey that can possibly be done.

I can't remember what they were called but one station is in portugal, the other in vietnam. Does anyone know what they are/any website links?

I am currently travelling around South East Asia before doing the Trans-siberian Railway starting in Hong Kong.

I will need to get from Hanoi to Hong Kong overland (must not be flying!) - does anyone know how easy this is to do by train (and what the exact details are), or whether there is potential to go by boat (even a freight ship, maybe?) ?

Can you buy malaria pills over the counter here in Phnom Penh? Which brand should I look for? What dosage? I'm planning to do a lot of trekking and spending time on the countryside.

Does anyone know if the international ATM machines (ANZ banks) with a cirrus/maestro logo charge a fee everytime you use the machine? In Vietnam they charge you 20,000 VND.

Do these machines still dispense money in US dollars or have they started giving out riels?

I've heard that getting your visa for Vietnam can be a bit of a nightmare so I'm applying for it before I leave but it asks for your proposed entry date....

Considering Vietnam and Cambodia (and also Thailand though it doesn't belong to this thread):

What would be the best beach in your opinion?

I'm thinking about something beautiful, relaxed, not too overrun by package tourists, some good local food and not only banana pancakes etc. would come in handy as well and maybe some possibilities to have a late drink and or party.

i'm travelling in laos this month and i wonder if i should take any malaria pills.
(i hope not!)
i believe that my route will be entering from north side from thailand and go all the way down to cambodia.
i guess i'll stay both at cities and villages, for a total period of 2 weeks.
mosquito prophylaxis is for sure to be thorough.
you have any suggestions?
