We will be in Ninh Binh in July, staying at the Emereralda Resort near Van Long Nature Reserve. I see from Google Maps that it's over 20km to the Mua Caves, so we will need to hire a car. In order to make the best use of the car for the day (or half day) what's near Mua Caves that we should also explore? I don't want to hire a car just to go to the one place.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

I came there and also visited Tam Coc by boat - about 4 KM from Mua Cave. You can ask driver if he can drive you to Thung Nham in the afternoon to see many birds there.

There is no Mua CAVE, it is a very short TUNNEL (the Viet do not make the difference) which served as a Viet hospital during the French Indochina and Vietnam wars The thing to do there is to climb the 450 steps leading to the summit of the peak ,from which you have a SUPERB view of the entire region

A bit out of the way but Phat Diem for the unusual cathedral complex is good.

I agree, Phat Diem is exceptional but it is at 34 km from Tam Coc, so you need a car or a rented scooter

Yes it's the climb to the top for the views that we're after. I didn't know what the place is called and when i checked google images I saw it referred to as Mua Cave. I hope I've got the right place - the place that has the large dragon up on top of one of the peaks. Are we talking about the same place? If so what should I be calling it?

Yes, it is the place with the dragon on top and you just call it "Hang Mua"

Ah yes, that rings a bell. Many thanks.

Would you say it's better to climb to the top in the morning or late afternoon? I'm talking about July so need to avoid the hottest part of the day. Just wondering if one time or another is notably bad/good for whatever reason. This would be on a week day, not weekend.

Hi
I and my BF have visited Ninh Binh on may. The tour was so amazing. we took 2 days and 1-night tour from Win Win Travel. the services are great and the tour guide as well. we had such a great time in Bungalow; Tam Coc; Hoa Lu; Bich Dong and Mua grotto as well the view on the top was so much breathtaking. Besides; we got so many photos of a bunch of wild pig babies along. and joined a cooking class and many other memorable things. by the way, this time is perfect to visit Tam Coc or Trang An 'cause the immense rice field change its color from green to yellow. I cannot wait to see that. we have a plan to come back soon. you can take a short look at their web: http://ninhbinhhiddencharm.com or their review on Tripadvisor as well. have a nice Trip

Thanks

Katie
