I have a motorola v360 that I would like to take with me this summer to Vietnam. I will need a phone as I am a teacher accompanying a group of teenagers on a trekkiing/volunteer trip.

I am going to get my phone unlocked here first its currently with o2 in Ireland. There are shops here where they unlock for phone to all networks, although, am not exactly sure how 'legal' that is???

Anyway can anyone please reccommend a Vietnamese mobile phone company who does Pay per go sim cards? I will mostly be using it for texting internationallly some internationl calls laocal calls and local texts. Will this work in Thailand?

Or would i be better off getting a mobile with sim in Vietnam?

Thanks

Not exactly a direct answer to your question but I wouldn’t bother to bring my cell phone to Vietnam. Instead, every time I went to Vietnam, I bought a USED CELL PHONE. They are so cheap and plentiful, for about 500,000 VND ( $30 USD ) I got a good Nokia with all features include Simm Card. I sold it back to the same place that I bought it from for half price when I left.

You can take your Motorola V360 to Vietnam and put in a new Vietnam Simm Card, I find that most Cell Phone Network in Vietnam are the same and Simm Card are available at any phone store. Remember that you must have different Simm Card for each country.

Just go with your original plan. Bring your own, unlocked phone and buy a SIM card. They are sold everywhere, including the Post Office. I think the minimum amount is 75,000 VND. Your locals calls won't be that much, but the international ones might be pricey - check the rates.

I brought my moto v551 (unlocked it in Thailand) and had no problems with local SIMs in Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

1-2 Go in Thailand can be set to international roaming and can be used in Laos and Cambodia (although both have their own networks as well). Not sure if 1-2 GO can be used in VN. Vietnam has its own networks, and I went with MobiTel.

First, getting your phone unlocked is not "illegal"! As you know there are shops in Ireland that will do it for a small fee. You can also get the same "unlocking" service in Thailand or Vietnam for an even smaller fee. If you're flying into BKK, just go to the MBK shopping center and on the 4th floor there are LOTS of phone shops to help you. You can buy a Thailand sim card for around 200 baht. Once you're in Vietnam go to any phone shop, they are ALL over, any taxi or cyclo driver can take you to the nearest one. Sim cards in Vietnam are priced by how lucky the numbers are (around 90,000 vnd), a number with lots of "8s" will cost more. Have the phone shop sales person set your phone for english prompts and show you how to send international texts.
