hello there,
my BF and i fly in to HCMC on 4th july and leave the country from hanoi on the 29th july.
we are planning on also visiting laos and it would be highly appreciated if you could tell us something about:
weather during that time of the year
things we have to see
how would you consider public transport in regard of safety costs, alternatives?
are the hassles at the boarder to laos?

It's very hot in northern and central Vietnam in July. In Hanoi, the humidity can reach even 90%. Travelling overland between VN and Laos takes much time and sometimes hassles, it also depends on which border you plan to cross. Fly if you can.

Flights to Laos are only with lao airlines. They dont have a great record (not that anyone knows really because they dont publish their safety records!) but we took two flights with them anyway and they were fine. The roads are not great but passable and for our bus journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng we took on a guy with a machine gun half way during the trip. Seemingly its not all that serious a threat but there have been attacks on that bus route and the route to the plain of jars also by bandits. A night or two in Vietiennte would be enough. Vang Vieng is a nice place to chill out for a while.
