Sorry for what might seem like a silly question, is there a difference between single and double rooms and single and double occupancy when booking online. ie. I have a quote for a single and double room rates - we heard somewhere that a single room would contain 1 double bed. The place we're in now in HCMC was booked as a double, and we actually have 2 beds ( 1 single and 1 double ) and I'm not too sure if it's because we booked a double or if we just ended up with a 3 person room as there weren't any others available.

I imagine it's a bit of a crap shoot depending on the hotel, I just wanted to make sure I understood so I wasn't booking doubles and paying a little more when I could should be booking singles ( with double occupancy ).
After travelling through europe for a few months I can book a penthouse and still pay less ( but I'd rather not ).

Usually in SE Asia, a double means two beds and a single means one (double) bed. Some western-run places use the terms twin/ double/single the way you're used to. Best to clarify when you book that you need a room for 2 people, one bed.

No one seems to agree on what they mean, but try this:
Single: a bed for one person. Few places have one single-sized bed in a room so a "single" will often result in a bed suitable for two, i.e. a double bed.
Double: might mean a double-sized bed, it might mean two beds - best to clarify with the hotel/guesthouse as to what bed configuration you're getting.
Twin: Should mean two beds in a room, but again, clarify with the hotel/guesthouse.

If I ask for a single room I am told either they don't have one or given one with a double bed or a single and double bed or, les often, 2 single beds. Generally I ask for a room for one person and get one of the above. On rare occassions I am offered some crummy little room off the lobby, but I usually decline.
Mostly I pay the same or a little less than a double room, but I do get 2 towels and 2 pillows. Just enjoy the extra bed.

I'm not sure about you but I was under the impression single meant one small bed, double meant one big bed and twin meant two beds (be they big or small). If you are booking a room and are not sure what terms any particular GH uses to describe the rooms then it doesn't take much to ask.
If you are booking online through Hostel World or something then double will mean one big bed and twin will mean two (big/ small) beds
