A friend has just sent me the following message. For you to note:
Quote
I've lifted the following from the notice that recently appeared in my room:-
IN ORDER TO PREVENT THIS FROM THE CRIMINALS, TOURISTS ARE SO KIND NOT TO DO THE FOLLOWINGS :
1) carry purse, wallet, bag or camera on one your shoulder
2) show off your jewellry so much on traffiking
Immediately inform the closest police station or connect 058 ***** for help if any.

This is about the dumbest and non-informative post I have seen !!!
What is the point of this post ?
ONE LOVE !!
Mike

Well, most tourist are smart enough to know that when in a developing country, and in major city centers, like anywhere from Rio to Bangkok, wearing a purse and loud jewelry can attract the unsavory types and make you a target for crime...
So, the Hotel owner is just warning the idiots that do not know that the average wage is $150 month, and dont wear $15,000 diamond crusted watches in crowded markets....shit happens....dont take what you cant afford to loose, is my rule of thumb...

This OP should be very appropriate for Viet Kieu than for the foreigners. Time after time, I have seen so many Viet Kieu who get to visit their home country for the first time want to show off & make the poor VNese envy them. They start speaking BROKEN English & act like they don't know how to speak Vietnamese anymore. That really bothers me.
Thanks Tim, for answering Mike's question. I use your rule of thumb, too. The post is just a reminder to travellers to be careful and to not display their valuables.

Yes, those uppish VKs bother me, too, but what bothers me more is the above message for elevating the observation from a trivially obvious point to the stereotypical level.
