We traveled for 4 weeks around Vietnam and Cambodia and I found the biggest waste of time was traveling by train and bus. For the long hauls like Hanoi to Da Nang and then to Saigon I would recommend flying. Vietnam Airlines is very good. Remember this message after your first train ride to Da Nang.

Independent, at least you can take it at your own speed and stay and go where you want to go, not following someone else's routine. Buses are frequent and cheap, so i'd say definitely do it alone! Two weeks is loads! Well just to see the "main" places, if you'd call them that.
