I understand that 2 weeks is short for Vietnam, so I'm thinking of staying mostly north, but I need ideas of where to go! I am not a city person really, nor do I like to party. I like smaller towns and natural beauty and lots of cultures. The place that I most am looking forward to is Ninh Binh, ha long bay, and the Mekong river. I'll be going in May as well, so where should I go, for how long and what are the biggest must see's/do's

I don't want to rush myself at all, I would prefer to see fewer places and really see them."

There are a lot of things in the North that you can explore if you're looking for quiet places. Halong Bay is the ideal choice for you with breathtaking views, especially when you take a cruise tour in 3 days. I recommend you other stunning destinations like Sapa and Mai Chau. They're the best places in the North to do trekking and experience homestay for 1 week. Then you can go to Hanoi for the rest of time. Although you don't like noisy places, Hanoi can also provide you private corner to enjoy your own time.

You can visit Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa, Ninh Binh, HCMC, Mekong Delta and some beach in Southern VN within 2 weeks.

I am Minh. I am a teacher in a remote area of Bac Ha town. So I would love to advice you should spend your time about 2days in Our village. It is a peacefull place with unique ethnic such as La chi people, Black dao peole.
Hope to see u

15 days for the whole of Vietnam is crazy ! Do only the fabulous North, with Hanoi, one day superb excursion West Pagodas + ancient village of Duong Lam ; Halong Bay ; DAY EXPRESS bus DIRECT Hanoi-Sapa and 3 days Sapa ; bus Sapa-Lao Cai-Bac Ha for Can Cau and BH Markets (CC on Saturday morning and Bh on Sunday, so you have to calcualte your days, maybe it will be BH first and Sapa after. Return Hnaoi and 3 days Babe Lake; then you spend the esrt of the time in very beautiful "Halong bay on Land" (Tam Coc) at famous hotel Chez Loan

Other solution : 8-9 days only in the North (Hanoi/Halong/Sapa and Tam Coc), then night train NINH BINH-Hue, 2 days Hue, day train Hue-Danang + taxi DNG-Hoi An, and return to Hanoi by flight DNG-Hanoi. More things visited, essentially historic monuments in Hue and the ancient city in Hoi An, but more transfers from one site to another. If you are mainly a Nature person, then staying in the North is preferable.

In addition to Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong, you should perhaps do some research on: Mai Chau or Pu Luong Nature Reserve (more pristine). Let say if you spend 8-10 days in the North, you still have some days for Mekong delta, fly from Hanoi to HCM, then take a bus to Mekong (pick up 1 or 2 destinations to visit). Hue and Hoi An are very beautiful and interesting, so you may consider them instead of Mekong Delta.

They could but I would not recommend it. I would stick to the north there is plenty to see and do. Did you read the bit about not wishing to rush it?

Suggest apart from Hanoi and Halong Bay a circular trip up in the NW.
