I've looked on this site and all over the internet and my guide books to locate a night train (or a reasonably comfortable bus)that will take me directly from Halong Bay area (I plan to be departing from Cat Ba Island but can probably find transport to Halong City)to Sapa. The reason I'm seeking a night train is because I really need to get there (Lao Cai) by Sunday morning for the Bac Ha Sunday markets. A night train is the only way I can get there in time from Halong Bay unless I leave Halong early and spend the day in Hanoi. Please and thank you!

If you really want to take the night train to Sapa you'll have to get back to Hanoi somehow to catch it.

Yes, basically there isn't a direct train, so you need to travel back to Hanoi during the day on Saturday to arrive comfortably in time to catch the Saturday evening (overnight) train to Lao Cai.
If it were me, I would also try and buy the ticket for that overnight train several days in advance - ie. as soon as you arrive in Hanoi, before going out to Halong.

There is no direct train from Halong to Sapa. You should go back to Hanoi to catch the night train to Sapa.
