I lived in Jakarta in the early nineties when McD opened there. Would the Indonesians go for it? They stormed the place and keep on coming back. Whomever is going to run that franchise in Saigon is going to be very rich.

OK, but i'm taking bets that you won't see Starbucks there anytime soon.

One thing you just cant avoid, multi national chains in booming economies, Mc D's or Starbucks, Alamo or Nike, its all gonna get there sooner or later.

In Costa Rica, its quite a social outing for the locals to splurge at Pizza Hut or Mc D's, and the biggest thing is the kids live the ice cream cones...something there is not a lot of in Latin America, due to pasturization...

It's going to be a hardball game with all the delicious, tongue-piercing VNese dishes out there, I am personally not a fan of western dishes outside of, well, the West. If any, the big M will probably be a trendy place to go to for the young VNese, they can still make some money if they know well not to open too many of them.

When I was in China a couple years ago, I saw a Pizza Hut in Shanghai. There was a HUGE line outside - people waiting for up to an hour to get inside. There was a Maitre D type person at a podium outside the door and velvet ropes on poles designating the pattern for the line up. Young and old, they patiently waited. In a grocery store in another Chinese city (forget the name) I was the only caucasion around and a group of Chinese people politely formed a half circle by the cashier to silently study the food I bought as the cashier rung it up. - ( What does the white, round eye eat????) Truly amazing. While I never saw Vietnamese people being quite so obvious, I'm sure they were/are just as curious about me and western fast food as I am about them and their food. Too bad McDonalds, KFC etc. is so unhealthy and fattening.

I think if your traveling from the west and your on the road for months in Asia, and ya have a craving for a burger, you may breakdown and get one, with a shake, and some fries, as much I hate the stuff, it aint bad when your hungover...

When you say fake Starbucks, do you mean the Gloria Jeans near the Caravelle? Plus, most young Viets don't like KFC. They say it tastes weird. So I'm assuming they may have the same reaction to Maccas 'food'. Viets tend to prefer their own food.

I agree - the locals may well not take to it, I can't get my kids to eat maccas unless there is absolutely no other option at all!

With Vietnamese food being so delicious and their breads being so good, the local teens may well like to hang out at the venue, but only the McTourists will be buying!!

I used to work for a company that was short on meeting rooms, but was next to a McDonalds restaurant... They often held meetings at McDonalds for the clean & airconditioned environment. :) Just the short walk and the change of scenery actually resulted in more productive meetings, or so I'd liked to think.

Similar thing applies to students; a spaceous, clean environment where you can get an ice coffee and then study in airconditioned comfort for the whole afternoon.

So, there's SOME good things about them.
