Going to Vietnam in August and will be spending some time in Hoi an.
Our flight out to Hanoi leaves from Danang around 1pm and i'm not sure weather we should stay our last night in that area in Hoi an or should we go to Danang for a night.
I have read that is about 30km from Hoi an but having traveled in Vietnam before i'm aware that short distances can sometimes take a long time to get from a to b.
Any comments will be appreciated : )

I would spend the extra time in Hoi An, so much to see. From memory it was only about 40min to Danang airport.

I spent a night in Danang I didn't find it particularly inspiring. There is a Laos consulate there however should you wish to procure a visa for Laos. Min came overnight.

I hired a pushbike on Hoi An & rode to Denang for a day. Didn't do much in Denang however the ride was fantastic. There's a town about 1/2 way where there is a limestone mountain & they use that to make headstones and sculptures etc. Very interesting. Also there was an army installation of a big gun thing which I went to look at but got chased away.

It's a kinda modern city of Vietnam. You would have great shots in the late afternoon if you walk on the Song Han bridge to another side of Danang. Marble Mountain is also worth to pay a visit if you are around its area (8 km from Danang City)!
Good luck

Walking by Han river at night and watching the locals would be fun. Also you should visit the Marble Mountain, Cham Museum and My Khe beach if you have time. For a hotel recommendation, find a post in FAQ Vietnam, someone recommended a US$12 room and some other things he/she suggested to do there.

Da Nang has some places worth going to but as the place is given such light coverage in most guidebooks they're not as easy to find.
If you've already had a few days in Hoi An then I would stay the night in Danang.
Breakfast at the hidden gem that is Truc Lam Vien - 37 Le Dinh Duong st. Truc Lam Vien @ vnnavi
After breakfast you could visit the nearby Cham Museum, (one of the few museums in VN i have visited that really impressed me) or you could jump in a cab for the 5 min. ride to My Khe beach for a swim before heading to Ha Noi.

Begbie4, there's no doubt most replies here will say stay the extra night in Hoi An as it really is a great place. But how many of them have actually spent any time in Da Nang?

The two main roads from Hoi An to Da Nang are mostly straight and dead flat. The 40 mins quoted above is about right and won't vary by more than 5 or so mins.
So, if it's for the sake of worrying about travelling from Hoi An to Da Nang on the day of your flight: don't worry, it won't be a problem.
If it's for the sake of seeing and doing a few extra things, then stay the night in Da Nang before heading off for Ha Noi.

i was going to say that you should stay in hoi an (gosh, i love hoi an!), but seeing that your flight is at 1pm, i'd say go to danang the day before and take it easy. when on holiday, the last thing you want to do is be rushing about;)

and look out for the coastal views while on the bus between hoi an and danang. it's beautiful! have fun!
