Hi I was wondering if anyone had any information on getting from Hong Kong to Vietnam the cheapest way possible! Whether by sea or by air.

If we were to travel overland by train through China without getting off at all- do we need a visa for China?

any info at all is much appreciated!!

No, if you travel from HK to VN W/o getting off of the bus even to go to the restroom, then you do not need a visa at all.

First of all, there are no direct trains neither buses from HK to Vietnam (so you'll have to get off somewhere). Second, even if there were, I doubt the Chinese authorities would allow something like that.

However, a visa to China is easier and simpler to get than a visa to Vietnam.

But if you just wanna go from HK to Vietnam, you may consider to fly from HK or from Macau (most/many citizenships don't need visas for both HK and Macau). There are some low-fare asian companies operating from HK and Macau

You will have to change the train at the Pingxiang - Dong Dang border and get immigration stamp at this point. Also a visa for Hong Kong is different from a visa for China, I believe when you enter China mainland they will ask you about the visa (I travelled on this route before and got some stamps).

The cheap way is you fly Macau - Bangkok - Hanoi with Air Asia. Check if Tiger Airways flies between Macau and Singapore or not. Tiger Airways flies between Singapore and Hanoi/Sai Gon. Direct flight with Vietnam Airlines and Cathay Pacific is expensive.
