Hi there,

I’m traveling from ho chi min to Phu Quoc by land and was wondering if this is feasible this way and what recommendations would you have for services on the way (boat, restaurant, guesthouse):

  • getting the sleeper bus from HCM to can tho at 00am on Tuesday and arrive there at 3.30am

  • getting a taxi (?) to the pier and go to the floating markets - what boat you recommend (we avoid touristic) and what markets should we go to?

  • having lunch somewhere after the markets and get a bus to Rach Gia

  • sleep over at Rach Gia and getting the ferry to Phuc quoc in the morning (8am or so)

Is this possible?

Does it get us a good taste of the Mekong delta?

We also want beach time so that’s why we want to take the first ferry to Phuc quoc on Wednesday morning (reason why we want to sleep over at Rach gia the previous night)

Many thanks!

1 night stay in Mekong Delta is more worth a visit than in Rach Gia. You can do 12:40 pm or 1 pm high speed boat from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc after overnight stay in Can Tho.

How many days do you have free between leaving HCMC and arriving Rach Gia?
As a minimum, I would plan to have 2 nights in Can Tho. Arriving there in the afternoon, will give you time to arrange a trip to the floating markets.

I stayed at the Kim Lan hotel ($25)l in Can Tho six months ago. We arranged a small boat tour to both the Cai Rang and Phong Dien floating markets, including a boat driver, guide and nice breakfast for two people, for $50 USD.
It was an excellent trip. You can arrange the same tour directly at the pier for slightly less.

You should try to spend the night before you go to the floating markets in Can Tho. Maybe instead of leaving HCMC at 00am you can leave in the afternoon. In Can Tho we stayed at the Green Village Mekong (88$ for 4 people, dinner, breakfast and bikes included). The hotel organizes a tour of the Cai Ran floating market (38$ per person). It isn’t touristic, and it includes breakfast (noodles, coffee and pineapple), a guide and a stop at both the land market and the noodle factory. Both really nice.
In the morning, after you do the tour, you could take some free bicicles from the hotel and explore the Mekong by yourselves. And then go to Rach Gia after lunch.
