Need to do a spot of work on the laptop while in Hanoi next month, between travelling. I'm looking for a nice cheapish hotel or guesthouse with reasonably fast wifi and a/c, where I can stay and work in for a few days... any tips?

Just a thought and a bit cheeky at that, but the Sofitel Metropole has wifi in its lounge and downstairs bar areas. You could saunter in and sit in the lobby and use the laptop there, or sit by the pool bar thingy and use the wifi connection with a frostly ale.

The OP was asking for in-room wi-fi. Your suggestion is silly, because there are HUNDREDS of cafes and bars in Hanoi offering free wi-fi. No need to spend $5 on a "frosty ale." OP, the Elegance Hotel has in-room computers with internet, and many other GH's have wi-fi, but you'll have to wait for posters with first-hand experience to give you names/addresses.
