She is a tad poorer, as she got her cell phone stolen from her purse in a very culturally rich city...

There's no crime in UK so she should be fine.

Probably the Vietnamese thought you looked like Vietkeu (formerly known as the boat people who flew from Vietnam) with your asian looks. It's known that the locals doesn't appreciate Vietkeu people, if you just tried to read about the Vietnamese culture as anyone else does before they travel you would have known.

Cursing and shouting on the streets; nobody will react on it. If they would they'd lose "their face".

It looks like your home stay is Heaven. Didn't you ever experienced someone cutting a queque before??? Never been in Amsterdam by far I'm sure!!!

I can go on like this explaining, but I think you're just an ignorant person.
Dutch people with similar behaviour they go to 5 stars campsites runned by dutch staff and enjoying their holidays with other dutch (only). They also bring 10 kgs of potatoes, kilo's of dutch cheese and groceries for 14 days with them in their caravans, they'll never leave the campsite at 2 km distance, otherwise they'll end up in an unciviliced country. Sounds familiar?

I'm very sorry for you that you didn't enjoyed Vietnam but we will!

Norm I'm only telling you this because you seem like a likable bloke: that is quite a sappy signature. Did you steal it from a Mariah Carey song?

Hi
I felt like commenting for a long time, but I dont like the personal attacks here.
I am not an english speaker, so take it easy on me.
I agree with the OP on some of her arguments and I thank her for beeing bold
to come forward. That is the kind of information some people want and had I had
it before my trip to Hanoi it would have saved me some unpleasant experiences.
I am also an experienced traveller and have seen horrible traffic in many places.
But Hanoi beats everything, sometimes I gave up crossing the street and I stayed
in my hotel because even the sidewalks were occupied by motorbikes. In fact
many places I had to walk out into the street to pass and nearly got hit a couple
of times.
I will finish with a warning to the elderly travellers: If you are not walking so well
and kind of nervous, keep away from Hanoi.
