Hey guys-
I can't find relevant info here, so hoping you can help me. We're flying into Hanoi around 7:00 PM -- hoping to snag one of the Vietnam Airlines shuttles to the OQ. I know they run from their office near the lake to the airport for around $3US -- do they also run the other way? If so, what time do they stop running? If we can't hop on one of those, is the cost for a taxi to the OQ still $10US? Thanks for the help....

Welcome back to Vietnam! Yes, the shuttle runs the other way, but I'm not sure of the cut-off time. I have a feeling that you might miss the last one, but I'm not sure about that. I'll try to check for you, if no one else knows. Yes, the taxi is still $10.

WE arrived in Hanoi around seven and got on the Vietnam Airlines shuttle. However, they will (and did) cancel if there are not enough passengers, we had 5 and they cancelled. Price is $2.20 or 3500 dong. A cab to town is about $12 dollars. We split it w/3 Soth Vietnamese business men and so it was about the same price as the shuttle. You can find the shuttle easy enough just outside the airport exit doors and a bit to the left.

Much thanks, guys. Looking forward to coming back -- I've been dreaming about going to Lay Bac for about five months now....

Is there a taxi stand like there is in BKK? If not, where do we catch a cab? Thanks for the info.
YelloFello, Taxis at HAN work very much like BKK, with some exceptions. When you exit the treminal look to the right you'll see a taxi dispatch area with an attendant to direct you to the next taxi. There are some differences, HAN is MUCH smaller than BKK, HAN has NO dispatch fee (but tip the dispatcher if you want), taxi fare to town is fixed at $10usd/160,000vnd (even if the meter is on and says more you only pay $10 and tip if you want), and unlike BKK fare INCLUDES tolls. Remember you may need to insist on being taken to your hotel of choice, even if driver says it's full, burned down or very dirty. Of course if you don't have a booking the driver will be more than happy to find you a place at a hotel that will pay him a small commission.

CMBurns,
Thanks for the tips. Is there a limit on how many people per taxi? I'll be travelling with 3 others and was just wondering if the price goes up if more people are riding. Thanks again!
Hummm, well the fares the same, but I can't see getting 4 people and their luggage in one regular size taxi. Even if you're all traveling fairly light and/or small people the 45/60 minute ride into the city is going to be VERY cramped. You might ask the dispatcher to try and find you a van, otherwise I think you need two cabs.
