Hi everyone,

I have been communicating with my hostel about getting a taxi from the airport to the city center when I arrive. The hostel owner is offering to send me one that will cost $16. I'm balling on a very tight budget, and I was wondering if I should take up his offer or look around at the airport for a better deal? He claims that I will be ripped off unless I take his offer up. What do y'all think?

You can go by 86 bus - 30,000 vnd(=1.3usd) /person - the destination of which is Hanoi railway station. The bus goes across the city so ask the driver the where to get off is the best for you.

Various choices for you 'cuz a lot of taxi, buses fromthe airport to the center: taxi (around 15USD), shuttle bus (2USD), bus No 86 (30,000VND) stops at several bus stops on the way to Hanoi train station.

The airlines' shuttle buses are probably the best deal at about $2USD. When you exit the terminal look for white vans parked out front. The vans leave when full and drop you at the airline office (or maybe even your hotel) where it's a reasonable walk to most hotels near the lake.

16$ is a good price/ Cheaper solution : the Vietnam Airlines minibuses (2.50$) which stop you in front of their office smack in Old Hanoi near Hoan Kiem Lake and the cathedral

I've encountered the same thing with the same exact amount. I think we're referring to a similar hostel. Anyhow, in my case, my ETA in Hanoi is 1AM and I was told that there are no public transportation available at that time. As a sign of courtesy, the hostel offered me to have their own car pick me up. The offer is appealing considering how tired I would be by the time I arrive. I'm still thinking about it though. But I guess taxis are up and running 24/7 especially in the airport area.

Any time there are flights arriving/departing there will be taxis going to/from the airport.

Do the minibuses/white vans run 24 hours from the airport to the Vietnam Airline office (or somewhere else not too far from the lake)? Of course I don't expect them to run every 10 or 15 minutes after 1 am in the morning, I'm just looking for an alternative to a taxi.
Thanks.

You are arriving in a foreign country at 1am, after a long flight. Your hostel owner offered to send a car to pick you up, for $16.

What's the problem again?

No they (minibuses) don't run 24 hours, think they stop well before midnight. $16 is a reasonable rate.
