Planning on a VN trip in Feb/Mar 2018. I've not been to VN before and would appreciate any tips on a decent guesthouse in HCMC to start things off. Preferably $20 or under. Thanks.
There are many cheap guesthouses/ hotels along Pham Ngu Lao street, De Tham street and Bui Vien street (Backpacker's area) in district 1 HCMC.
I have same idea with the first comment, you can find the best one on Tripadvisor or Agoda

A lot of places aren't on either TA or Agoda. Best just head to backpacker area and take a look around. And don't forget to go up side lanes. That's how we found the first pace we stayed at.
Humm, with a screen name like "boomer43" I'm guessing you're not a millennial and may prefer hotels with a lift as I do. On my last trip in early Sept. my usual hotels were full so I stayed at Bali-B for a few days when I arrived and at Saigon Amigo before leaving. Both have lifts and were under $20USD on www.booking.com Bali-B is on Nguyen Thai Hoc and was about $17USD. Saigon Amigo is on the first (smaller) alley behind De Tham was $19USD included breakfast and the better of the two.
